Stripes

Lionfish are a challenge to paint but I love their funny faces and the detail in their stripes and fins. I found these two at the Odysea Aquarium in Scottsdale, AZ.
I began this painting with a detailed pencil drawing on layout bond in the exact size of my canvas board. My next step was to paint the entire background before transferring the drawing onto the wet painted surface using a caliper to mark the outlines of my shapes and then re-creating my drawing using a brush dipped in mineral spirits as well as a rag to wipe out the larger shapes back to white. After the drawing wipe out seemed sufficiently refined, I painted one fish at a time adding detail until I felt I had captured the quiet mood of their journey.
